JAMES TASSIE Database in the Beazley Archives
THE BEST!
The Beazley Archive James Tassie impression image database together with the related Tassie 1791 Catalogue by Raspe (this takes awhile to load) is one of the most valuable ENGRAVED GEM identification tools. While it certainly doesn’t contain all of the most famous classic and modern (up until 1791) ENGRAVED GEMS, it arguably has the most online, all in one place. The set, together, (Beazley Archive images and downloadable, searchable Tassie Catalogue) can’t be beat.
James Tassie (1735–1799) was a Scottish gem engraver and modeller. After moving to London in 1766 he produced many original miniature wax medallion heads of the famous and made and acquired numerous castings of ancientt and modern intaglios and cameos – these are the subjects of this database.
OVERVIEW:
- One of the best ENGRAVED GEM identification tools (also see “La collezione Paoletti”)
- Images numbered to correspond with catalog text entries are invaluable.
- The catalog contains identification and historical information about many of the gems (items).
- Search value of catalog text in Beazley Archive is limited to item numbers or page images.
- Use readily available (free) catalog download for searchable text.
- Use catalog Table of Arrangement and various indices in searches.
- Periodically scan or peruse images — you usually see something that is familiar.
WHAT’S IN THE PACKAGE?
- Images of the vast collection (15,800!) of engraved gem impressions of James Tassie. Tassie’s collection included casts from the earliest intaglios (c. 4th century B.C.) to ones engraved in the latter half of the 18th century. Each impression is photographed twice – the same one with alternate light sources. Each item is numbered to correspond to the description in the catalogue.
- A complete copy of “A DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF A GENERAL COLLECTION OF ANCIENT AND MODERN ENGRAVED GEMS, CAMEOS AS WELL AS INTAGLIOS, TAKEN FROM THE MOST CELEBRATED CABINETS IN EUROPE; AND CAST IN COLOURED PASTES, WHITE ENAMEL, AND SULPHURS, BY JAMES TASSIE, modeller; arranged and described by R. E. RASPE; and illustrated with copper- plates.” comprising over 900 pages; published two volumes in 1791, including:
- A comprehensive introduction and historical perspective
- A Table of Arrangement of the items
- 800 pages of items, numbered and identified (to varying degrees), with periodic commentary and, again, historical perspective
- Various indices:
- Subject
- Engraver
- Owner or collection
- Inscription (if any)
- 57 Plates of drawings of some individual gems
TIPS ON USE:
- The database is based upon the individual item number, 1 thru 15,800.
- Each module (Index, Plates, and Text) can be scrolled through by page or plate image or searched by item number; the problem is – how to find the item number in the first place.
- The text of the Catalogue on the Beazley Archive website is difficult to search and move around in. A separate, searchable copy of the Raspe catalogue is very helpful, if not a necessity.
- Download .pdf searchable copies of both Volumes of the Catalogue from:
- Vol I https://ia803006.us.archive.org/9/items/gri_33125008808442/gri_33125008808442.pdf
- Vol II https://ia600402.us.archive.org/35/items/gri_33125008808459/gri_33125008808459.pdf
- Use the .pdf copies to search the applicable sections of the catalogue (see below for a Table of Contents) for the known information (subject, owner, inscription or engraver) to determine or at least hone in on item number(s).
- In the “Plates” module enter a range around the number being sought (there are often several very similar items) and go to the possible plate image(s).
- Alternatively, visually scan the plates (using the Table of Contents or CONSPECTUS, below, is helpful to narrow the search), find the image, and go to the Catalogue text to find the item description.
Good luck!
TABLE OF CONTENTS
One of the big problems with the catalogue is that it doesn’t have a Table of Contents. The CONSPECTUS provides the catalogue’s arrangement of impressions by category and subcategories with the corresponding impression numbers. Click here for a very rough translation of the CONSPECTUS which is in French in the Catalogue (This is one of the first places to search for names or subjects). Following is a Table of Contents for the major headings in the Catalogue:

CONSPECTUS
[MyI: The CONSPECTUS in the Raspe publication was printed only in French. The following is a rough translation to English; no other translation could be found. I do not speak, read or write French, therefore I used the other tools available to me. The basis for this translation is an optical character recognition (OCR) copy of the .pdf file, which introduces quite a few errors to begin with. That copy was run then through Google Translate, a very valuable online tool, which, none the less, does have problems with 18th century French.
The translation was then compared to the headings and subheadings in the text of the Catalogue which is, thankfully, provided in both English and French. Not to make it too easy though, the text content varies somewhat from the original CONSPECTUS. Where English translation of names could not be found, they have been left in the original French. In other words, this is a very, very rough translation.
The numbers noted are the individual item numbers that relate to both the item descriptions in the Catalogue and the images provided on the Beazley Archive James Tassie database.]
