MyI Comments and Tips
The Beazley Archive with all 10 Monographs is — THE BEST!
The Beazley Archives is, without doubt, the most comprehensive, valuable online resource available to engraved gem researchers and enthusiasts. The ability to search and identify tens of thousands of individual engraved gems and impressions is unmatched.
The only and best way to learn how to use this resource is — to use it. There is no instruction book that I know of — I wish there were. Each individual user has to find his or her way, which. while quite inefficient if one is in a hurry, is not necessarily a bad thing. Scanning the material usually leads to bits and pieces of information one never expected to come upon.
It’s hard to overstate the value of the Beazley Archive. It’s harder yet to find a way to state one’s gratitude for all the effort that has gone into its creation. All I can say is a big THANK YOU!!!!
“The Classical Art Research Centre (CARC) is one of the strategic research units of the Oxford University Faculty of Classics….CARC was created out of the Beazley Archive in 2007…The Beazley Archive is built around the academic papers and photographs of Professor Sir John Beazley (1885-1970)“
The Beazley Archive is actually mostly about Pottery. The Gems and gem database are almost secondary — but for glyptic aficionados, they are of the utmost importance.
The “GEMS” pages are found at https://www.beazley.ox.ac.uk/carc/gems
“Study of the subject is a major part of the activities of the Classical Art Research Centre, and our Beazley Archive contains many thousands of gem impressions and copies.”
The ten monographs presented on the Beazley Archive website are shown below. Clicking on the title in CAPS will direct you to the selected monograph; clicking on the “MyI Comments” will direct you to the comments about the monograph, where available.
