Tassie Coin Impression MyI no 717
Purchased May 6, 2022.
Purchased From: Online shop of Timothy Medhurst. Original listing no longer available online.
Description:
An Early 19th Century Grand Tour Wax Coin Impression Of An Ancient Roman Coin, Probably A Sestertius, c.1-2nd Century A.D.
7.4cm wide overall.
The wax Impression laid to resin within its original card slip, numbered in ink “528”.
There is some minor wear to the card as expected with age. Some defacement to either the coin or wax.
[MyI: Because of very worn surface, no similar coin found.
Left face of coin appears to show bust of figure facing right. The right face shows a figure standing holding a caduceus, rod or spear on left side and “VENIP…” or VENTP….” Bottom to top on right. Search for “Felicitas holding caduceus” found some with similarities but nothing with letters next to standing figure.
Medhurst believes this to be Roman Sestertius.
The coin probably had some significance because Tassie in his letters mentioned several times only taking impressions of coins with some value.]
