Tassie Coin Impression  MyI no 719

Purchased May 6, 2022.

Purchased From:  Online shop of Timothy Medhurst.  Original listing no longer available online.

Description:
An Early 19th Century Grand Tour Wax Coin Impression Of An Ancient Greek Tetradrachm Of Acragas, Sicily, c.470-420 B.C.

5.8cm wide overall.

Obverse: Eagle standing left. Reverse: Crab with floral ornament below.

The wax Impression laid to resin within its original card slip, numbered in ink “16”.

Some wear and scuffs to the card as expected with age, the wax and resin cracked. An attractive and very decorative piece.  Medhurst original images shown below.

[MyI: The Eagle/Crab Tetradrachm identical to the MyI No. 719 could not be found. Similar coins were listed in the “Catalogue of Greek coins in the Hunterian collection, University of Glasgow” Vol 1 p156 pdf 234 of 638, shown below –

But as can be seen in the images 12, and 13 these are not the present coin.  These, and most all of the images found online have the AKPAC inscription to the right of the left facing eagle.  The MyI No. 219 has that inscription on the left side reading up.  The only coin found that is almost identical (the eagle seems to be from the same dye, but the crab has differences – flower and scroll work below — is shown below –
